45 lose vision due to 'contaminated' eye drops in TN
Six of those affected have been declared fully blind by the doctors.

Perambalur: Forty five persons, who underwent a cataract operation at a private hospital, on Saturday complained of loss of vision after being administered 'contaminated' eye drops, officials said.

Six persons have become totally blind, while nine are improving and have gained near normal vision, doctors at the Private Joseph Institute of Ophthalmology, where 29 of the 45 were referred, said.

A team of ophthalmologists from the Tiruchirappalli Government Hospital visited the Institute on Sunday and expressed satisfaction over the treatment being given to the twenty-nine.

The Perambalur District Collector Anil Mesha Ram has ordered a probe into the issue.

Patients from different villages in Rishivandiyam taluk in Villupuram district underwent the cataract operation during a camp jointly conducted by the Blindness Prevention Society and the private hospital on July 29.

Relatives of those affected picketed the hospital demanding immediate treatment and compensation for the affected.

The probe team headed by Dean of the Government Perambalur Medical College Dr R Balasubramanian visited the private hospital and collected samples of the eye drops and injection medicine administered to the 45.

The probe team inspected the operation theatre where the cataract operation was conducted on July 28. The team verified the hospital records and also visited the Joseph Institute of Ophthalmology.
