Imphal: Five personnel of Assam Rifles, including two officers, were killed on Monday when suspected United National Liberation Front (UNLF) militants laid an ambush at Old Somtal area in Chandel district.
The PRO of Assam Rifles informed that the personnel of 43 Assam Rifles were patrolling the area when suspected militants of UNLF laid an ambush on the troops and in the ensuing encounter, five of the security personnel lost their lives.
The troops tried to call in reinforcements and went after the militants. However, the militants managed to escape. Additional forces have been flown into the area as the spot is in a border area and difficult terrain.
The areas were earlier controlled by UNLF and troops had recently forced them out following which militants had been regularly carrying out attacks in the border areas.
It is suspected that the UNLF might have carried out the attack as its 45th foundation day falls tomorrow, AR sources said.
