Five persons, including four senior officers of the BRO, were sent to jail for their involvement in a Rs 1.79 crore scam pertaining to use of substandard material in construction of a road in Joshimath area of Chamoli district.

Five persons, including four senior officers of the BRO, were sent to jail for their involvement in a Rs 1.79 crore scam pertaining to use of substandard material in construction of a road in Joshimath area of Chamoli district.

Lt Colonel Shailendra Grover of the BRO and three other officers deployed in different projects of BRO in Sikkim, J-K and Uttarakhand, besides a contractor were sent to 14 days' judicial custody by a a special CBI court in Dehradun after they surrendered before it on Saturday, CBI sources said on Tuesday.

The officers and the contractor have been charged with using substandard material in construction of the strategically important Joshimath-Malari road in Chamoli district causing a loss of Rs 1.79 crore to the government  exchequer, he said.
