More than 9,000 candidates appeared for the Tamil Nadu State Eligibility Test (SET) held by Bharathiar University here on Sunday. The test is conducted to determine the eligibility as well as recruitment of lecturers to universities and colleges in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
According to Dr K G Senthilvasan, controller of examinations, Bharathiar University, the State nodal agency for UGC, the test was conducted at 12 centres, including Government Arts College in Nandanam, SIET College, Ethiraj College, Queen Mary’s, Anna Adarsh College and Loyola College. “Of the 10,555 allotted tickets, 9,173 candidates appeared for the test in Chennai,” Senthilvasan told Express.
The test, comprising objective type questions, was conducted in two sessions: Paper I and Paper II were held between 9.30 am to noon and Paper III was conducted in the afternoon between 1.30 pm to 4 pm. While Paper I was on general knowledge, the other two were subjective. “There were 27 subjects this year,” he said.
The test was conducted in 76 centres across the State, with 51,000 candidates - 87 per cent - appearing for it. Stating that the test went off without any hiccups, Senthilvasan said 76 observers had been appointed for each centre. “We also had an observer from the University Grants Commission,” he added.
State Education Secretary T S Sridhar, Bharathiar University V-C G James Pitchai and Senthilvasan, Secretary-SET, visited some centres.
Candidates’ bags go missing
The hand bags of three candidates, who appeared for the test at Anna Adarsh College in Anna Nagar, went missing at the centre. The bags contained expensive mobile phones, cash of `700, pen drive and voter ID cards. The three candidates later lodged a complaint at the local police station.
