Aimed at facilitating hi-tech farming, the district panchayat in association with the Department of Agriculture will set up three green houses each in the 84 panchayats.
The district panchayat has earmarked Rs 35 lakh as subsidy for hi-tech farming. Seventy five per cent of the cost of a unit with 400 square metres will be provided as subsidy.
A meeting chaired by district panchayat president Eldhose Kunnappally was held on Tuesday to review the progress of hi-tech farming. The authorities
expect that the use of pesticides could be reduced with hi-tech farming gaining popularity.
The district panchayat will implement another project with outlay of Rs 2.93 crore for promoting the cultivation of flowers, fruits and spices. Around 22 projects will be implemented in the agriculture sector in the district in the current financial year, said Kunnappally in a press release.
Of the Rs 3 crore allotted to the district for agriculture purposes, Rs 1.84 have been spent so far. 17,159 persons have registered so far for the pension scheme for farmers aged above 60. Another project with an outlay of Rs 1.69 crore will be implemented to promote agriculture among the school children.
