India's seven mega cities together have 41 Lok Sabha seats or almost 8 per cent of total Lok Sabha seats.

New Delhi: Over 48 cities in India have a population of 10 lakh or more. Among them, the five cities, namely Mumbai, Delhi, Kokata, Chennai and Bangalore are classified as top Metro cities. Hyderabad and Ahmedabad occupy the sixth and the seventh place respectively. Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad have 7, 6, 6, 3, 3, 3 and 2 Lok Sabha seats respectively.

If we add seats in the city outskirts or semi-urban areas, Delhi will have four more seats in the NCR region, Mumbai will have 3 more, Bangalore will have 2 more, Chennai 1 more and Hyderabad will have 1 seat respectively.

These seven mega cities together have 41 Lok Sabha seats or almost 8 per cent of total Lok Sabha seats in India. India has 543 Lok Sabha seats including many very small seats in the North East, Himalayas and Union Territories. Interestingly, the regional parties are quite strong in five of the total seven mega cities.

In Delhi, the AAP has emerged strong recently. Even though the AAP has national ambitions, its stronghold still remains Delhi.

In Mumbai, Shiv Sena and the MNS are strong and in Kolkata, the TMC is formidable.

In Chennai, it is the DMK v/s the AIADMK. The DMK is a dominant force in Chennai. In Hyderabad, the MIM is strong and the TRS is trying to grab Secundarabad. Bangalore and Ahmedabad are the only two mega cities not hit by the regional party wave.

The remaining 41 cities have a population ranging from more than 9.5 lakh to 45 lakh population. While Surat in Gujarat has 45 population, Guwahati has 9.68 lakh population. These cities together have another 50 Lok Sabha seats.

The country has 91 Lok Sabha seats in purely urban areas. It means, one-sixth of Lok Sabha seats or 16.5 per cent Lok Sabha seats in India are in these cities. According to 2011 Census, following cities have more than one million population.
