A face for eyes

The Indian chapter of the international charity organisation Sightsavers, established in 1966, has come up with a unique competition propagated through Facebook. ‘Through different eyes’, is an attempt to find an image for their website, which would be made their wallpaper and send out as an e-card to millions across the world.

The image will be the face of a campaign to spread awareness that sometimes, primary eye care and minor operations can restore vision to thousands. The competition is open to all residents of India, people of any age group can participate and the last date is August 30.

“This is the first time we are trying something like this, and we were planning to make it a monthly event. The selected photo will be published in our national and international website and rewarded,” says Bineesh E M, who hails from Wayanad and now works for Sightsavers in Mumbai. They have received close to hundred entries already.

Sightsavers is active in over 35 countries. They help the visually impaired regain vision and once they do, they hand them digital cameras, teach them to click, so that they can capture the world around them.

“For someone who is suddenly able to see the world, it is like discovering an unknown talent. They see the world better, the details explicit,” Bineesh adds. All these photographs are then showcased as exhibitions in different cities. The recent photography exhibition happened at Mumbai, and they are planning the next in Bangalore and Jaipur.

“Almost 80% of the blindness in our country is curable through minor operations. Most of it are variants of cataract,” says Bineesh. Sightsavers claims to have attempted to reach out to over 2 million people with potential eye problems.
