KOCHI: While other states have gone much ahead in the distribution of Aadhaar, Kerala is still lagging behind, Excise Minister K Babu has said. He was speaking at the districtlevel inauguration of the Aadhaar project at the District Panchayat Hall here on Monday.
"Andhra Pradesh , Maharashtra and Karnataka had implemented the project smoothly. Andhra Pradesh has issued cards to 65 lakh people while Maharashtra has issued cards to 30 lakh people and Karnataka is also not far behind with 29 lakh cards. But Kerala has issued only 7,706 cards," he said. "This is one of the main reasons why the Aadhaar project has been included in the government's 100days programme. Compared to other states, Kerala stands 24th in implementing the project. "We expect to implement the project across the state by March 2012," he said.

The Minister himself enrolled in the project at the function. The Aadhaar card contains a unique 12digit identification number, along with the person's photo, fingerprints of all 10 fingers and the retina image which maked it impossible to make duplicates, the Minister said.

District panchayat president Eldose Kunnappally said that the Thrikkakara panchayat would commence the project by enrolling people and this would be

followed by other panchayats.
