Hyderabad: After eight long years in jail, Satyam Babu is finally back home a free man.
Wrongfully framed for a murder he did not commit, the young man is now trying to get used to life on the outside.
“When he went to jail, his father cried a lot and eventually died. I am happy now that my son is back with me. I faced lot of difficulties when he was jail. But now, I feel everything is fine & my world is complete with my son next to me,” she said.
Not only Babu's family, people in his village Anasagaram in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district, welcomed him home in a grand way as well. Everyone in the village had supported Babu when he was wrongly framed in the case. Out of jail, he is now thanking all those people who believed he was not the culprit.
“I am so happy to be out of jail, as innocent. I am a free man, only because people had supported me. They only fought to get me justice and helped me prove innocent,” he said.
On August 11, 2008, Babu was picked up by the police from his home at 11 PM in the night. Police informed his mother that he would return the next day. But he did not. Instead, he was made the main accused in sensational Ayesha Meera murder case. He says he was tortured in police custody and forced to confess.
“What the government & police did, everyone knows. Even Ayesha's family has been saying I am not the culprit. They informed police about some other names but just to save them, I was made the scapegoat to close the case,” he said.
But now he says he wants to move on. The family has appealed to the Andhra Pradesh government to help Babu get a job so that they can recover from financial problems. Babu completed his degree from Ambedkar Open University while he was in jail and is ready to take up any job.
T Saumya, the local TDP MLA from Nandigama Constituency, visited the family and assured the government will offer all possible help.
“What happened was very sad. I will take up the issue to CM. We will assure they get compensation. But about re investigation we can only say after reading full judgement,” she said.
Meanwhile, there is demand that the case should be reopened for reinvestigation. The Andhra Pradesh women commission has reacted strongly to Babu’s exoneration and recommended the government to order re-probe.
Rajamumari, chairperson, Andhra Pradesh Women Commission, told CNN News18, “Whoever is involved in this botch up should be held accountable. We are recommending to the government to reopen the case. Not just culprit, all government officers, police, those who all tried to divert case by trying to save a political family must be punished. action must be taken.”
Babu said he will continue to fight along with Ayesha's parents to ensure justice is delivered and highlight how innocent people are put behind bars and for years for no fault of theirs.
“When I was leaving, many people in jail came up to me and said that you are going out, proved innocent. Like you, we all also innocent but we have not got justice. We are also suffering for being wrongly framed. When you go out tell the world about us. I want to appeal to the government to give justice to all those who are in jails, without committing any crime.”
