CHENNAI: If you think Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilisers M K Alagiri cannot speak English, perish the thought.On Tuesday morning, pestered by hacks for a sound byte at the Chennai airport, Alagiri blew his top - in English. He was at the airport to board a flight to New Delhi to attend the Union Cabinet meeting when waiting mediapersons got his goat.“Do you people have no other work?” he barked in English when a pesky journalist sought his reaction on the alleged implication of his wife in land-grabbing charges in Madurai and ended it with an expletive — “Stupid”. Stupid or not, the media sure was stupefied on hearing him speak in Queen’s English. When the DMK heavyweight was initially bombarded with questions as he alighted from his car, he brushed them aside. The questions included Dayanidhi Maran’s arrest and on whether he would return with his portfolio intact. With an irritated wave of his hand, he let them pass. Moments later, English flowed.
