In group B, India's Koneru Humpy played out a 26 move draw with fourth seed Brazilian Giovanni Vesconi and is now in seventh place with three points.

Arkadij Naiditsch of Germany shares the lead with young Magnus Carlsen of Norway with four points from five rounds.

Anand's arch-rival and joint leader after fourth round, Veselin Topalov failed to tame world junior champion Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan and split the point.

Anand, playing with white pieces was given a tough fight by the reigning champion who kept playing inspite of having lost the game structurally by the 26th move.

Playing on the Sicilian Najdorf lines, Leko, who was desperate for a victory after four consecutive draws, played passive positions but could not deter the Indian Grandmaster.

In the endgame when the position on the board became clear the Hungarian finally surrendered to a better player.

Ukrainian Vassily Ivanchuk crushed Gata Kamsky of US to join Topalov in second place with 3.5 points.

Kamsky, who meets Anand in the sixth round has been in very poor form with just one point in five games and is at the bottom of the table.
