Most people are of the opinion that an IIT education is good only for one's professional life. K M Rajath, an 18-year-old IIT student, proved that assumption wrong. He used his, what we may call, ‘IIT brains’ to help him come out tops in the city’s first ever doughnut eating competition organised by the Donut House in Egmore.On Saturday, though he got nowhere close to the Limca Record of eating 44 doughnuts in 12 minutes, he did manage to down 18 medium-sized doughnuts in the 15 minutes that were provided to all contestants.Opting for a strategy that none of the other contenders even thought of, he poured water on his doughnuts, gave them each a good squeeze (which would make them less dry and heavy) and ate away. The steady pace that he was going at did frighten Prem Kumar and Naveen Kumar, who had been the winners of the earlier rounds (they had each consumed 14 doughnuts).However, by the time Rajath finished his round, it became evident that they wouldn't be standing on the victory podium. They had to be content with the Donut House vouchers which they were awarded.But Rajath’s victory looked like it was going to be temporary as well when Bruce Miller, Dean of International Affairs, Hindustan University, gave him a tough fight by emerging on top in his round. As the end neared, he couldn’t manage to push one extra doughnut down his throat.So, Rajath and Bruce had to battle it out in a tiebreaker, where they had to stack the maximum number of doughnuts. Of course, Rajath used some complicated physics to emerge winner, taking with him the Don of Donuts, 2011, title.In the girls’ category, it was initially a giggly affair, with a lot of tissues being used to get away any hint of cream on the faces of participants.However, they did not take their competition lightly. The Lady Don of Donuts was won by Ekshikaa along with her mother Durga, who both had 13 doughnuts each. Arjun, who managed to consume 16 doughnuts, was the Don of Donuts in the children’s category. The 86 contestants had no problems eating 878 doughnuts out of the 950 that were produced specially for the competition.“We had to make four times more doughnuts than what we usually make,” informed Bhuvan, CEO and founder, Donut House.
