New Delhi: We all heard of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee making it to the Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Another Indian to make it to the coveted list is advocate and gender rights activist Anjali Gopalan.

Gopalan, 54, is the founder and Executive Director of The Naz Foundation (India) Trust, an NGO dedicated to the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic in India which she founded in 1994.

"Through her work at the Naz Foundation, Gopalan has done more than anyone else to advance the rights of gays and the transgendered in India, successfully petitioning the courts to get rid of a British-era law against sodomy," said Time.

"Gopalan has brought about a revolution in the status of sexual minorities in India and has done so joyously, dancing," the American magazine said.

In 2007, the Indian Ministry of Women and Child Development honoured Gopalan as one of the 10 women who have made outstanding social contributions.
