BHUBANESWAR: It was a ‘Special’ Children’s Day. From learning the functionality of a microlite aircraft, screening of a film to celebrating Christmas, the differently-abled children got to enjoy it all on the concluding day of the 10th annual Anjali Children’s Festival. On Children’s Day, nearly 50 kids, including normal children, were taken round a two-seater microlite aircraft in the morning at the NCC Air Wing unit at Pallashpali. They also interacted with the cadets of the unit, said Bikash Kanungo, commanding officer of the unit. A film ‘Yeh Hai Chhakkad Bakkad Bumbe Bo’ was also screened at the Rabindra Mandap. It was decided that Swabhiman, along with the Government, will screen children’s movies once a month at the Rabindra Mandap. The visual medium, being appealing, can be a powerful tool, said Sruti Mohapatra, director of the festival and founder of Swabhiman, a disability information and resource centre. Children’s films not only provide wholesome entertainment but can also play a role in educating and shaping young minds, she added. This year, nearly 1,500 delegates, including special children from across the country, participated in the festival. “The festival was a great learning experience. Events like these give us a break from studies and Children’s Day becomes more fun,” said Shivani Prajapati, a special student from Ramakrishna Ashram in Gwalior. Scholarships were distributed among six Anjali scholars and prizes were given to the winners of competitions by Governor MC Bhandare. The scholars included five differently-abled students who excelled in academics or creative and performing arts. The event was attended by Disability Commissioner Kasturi Mohapatra and KIIT founder Achyut Samant.
