CHENNAI: The Anna University, on Monday, inked an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with five Australian Universities that constitute the Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATNU). The five universities including the Curtin University of Technology, University of South Australia, RMIT University, University of Technology, Sydney and Queensland University of Technology, together have more than 20 per cent of the total student population in Australia and had already signed partnerships with various other Indian institutions such as IITs. Briefing reporters here, Professor Jeanette Hacket of the ATNU said that the agreements were a general MoU to facilitate faculty and student exchange. Under the pacts, there will be specific research agreements signed in the areas of information security, biomedical technology, nano technology and mining technology. “The tenure of the pacts would be for three years before which we expect significant collaborations in specific project and substantial transfer of teaching faculty,” she said. Jeanette said that the signing of the MoUs with the Anna University made a very logical connection. Members of the Australian Trade Commission said that about 30,000 Indian students now study in Australia. The higher education sector in the country was tightly regulated with onus on quality of research. Apart from exchange of faculty and students, the idea behind the pacts was to see if research works could be commercialised and converted into sources of revenue.
