It rained stones along Rajiv Rahadari on Monday as YSR Congress honorary president YS Vijayalaskhmi’s convoy proceeded towards Sircilla for the Chenetha Deeksha. Police fired tear gas shells and resorted to lathicharge against pro-Telangana activists who tried to obstruct the convoy at a number of places. As many as 20 persons, including two CIs and two constables, were injured in a melee involving TRS and YSRC activists and the police on the outskirts of Siddipet.
On her way to Sircilla, Vijayamma garlanded the statue of her husband, the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy, at Pragnapur village in Gajwel mandal. Even as she was interacting with party workers, TRS cadres tried to obstruct her and both the groups clashed.
Police arrested the TRS activists who organised a rasta roko at Duddeda village just before Vijayamma’s convoy passed through the village. Still, some agitators hurled eggs on the entourage.
From Duddeda to Rangadampalli X roads in Siddipet mandal, the convoy faced many hurdles. Vijayamma paid tributes at Telangana martyrs memorial at Rangadampalli.
As the convoy reached Siddipet outskirts, hundreds of TRS workers came on to the streets and raised slogans against YSRC leaders, branding them Telangana traitors. Police lobbed tear gas shells to disperse them when they threw stones on the YSRC leader’s convoy. Police resorted to lathicharge as YSRC and TRS activists clashed.
Twenty persons, including Siddipet CIs Ramchandar and Nagabushanam and two constables, were injured in the melee.
As tension mounted, the police detained the convoy for about 40 minutes. They took into custody 70 TRS activists before allowing Vijayamma to proceed. Similar scenes were witnessed at Gurralagondi village.
Not only the vehicles in the convoy, but also some private vehicles were damaged in stone-pelting. Police fired tear gas shells at Jakkanpur to disperse the protestors.
