HYDERABAD: In a major decision, the chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Saturday decided to extend insurance coverage to 6,000 persons every year under Apathbandhu scheme as against the present practice of 3,200 people. It has also been decided to include sun stroke and dog bite deaths under the scheme.The chief minister sanctioned Rs 10.70 crore under Chief Minister Relief Fund (CMRF) for the scheme. He cleared all the pending applications under the scheme on Saturday.Under the Apathbandhu Scheme launched in 1998, families below poverty line were being provided insurance coverage in case of accidental deaths. A sum of Rs 50,000 was being given to BPL families in case of accidental deaths. However the state government had hitherto limited the total applications to 3,200 per year. As a result several application have been pending for the last three years.The chief minister on Saturday cleared all the pending applications from 2007 to March 2011. As many as 976 applications (2007-08), 1,961 (2008-09) and 2,419 (2009-10) were cleared. Besides all the pending applications till March this year have also been cleared. The state government has tied up with an insurance company and the agreement will be in force from August 15, 2011 to August 15, 2012. With the increase of applications to 6,000 from this year the government hoped that all the victims of the BPL families would be covered and would get Rs 50,000 under the Apathbandhu scheme. Meanwhile, medical and health minister D L Ravindra Reddy said that out of the five tenders submitted, two insurance companies have been shortlisted - Star Health Insurance Company and the United India Insurance Company.
