If rumours are to be believed, the company will purchase 7.85-inch panels from LG Display and AU Optronics (AUO).

New Delhi: In a bid to compete with 7-inch tablets in the market including the Kindle Fire and Nook tablet, and large-size smartphones from major technology giants, Apple is likely to come up with a 7.85-inch iPad mini prior to the fourth quarter of 2012, said reports.

If rumours are to be believed, the company will purchase 7.85-inch panels from LG Display and AU Optronics (AUO). According to Digitimes, the Taiwanese tech site, makers in the supply chain are likely to begin production of the 7.85-inch models at the end of the second quarter of 2012.

Also as per CNET reports, Richard Shim, an analyst at DisplaySearch said, "Apple is also expressing interest in making a mini-iPad based on a 7.85-inch screen. That would come later in 2012, possibly in the second half sometime."

Apple's late co-founder Steve Jobs once criticised the 7-inch tablet size, saying that it was too small for a pleasant touchscreen experience. "7-inch tablets are tweeners: too big to compete with a smartphone and too small to compete with the iPad," said Jobs, adding "they are going to be DOA - dead on arrival".

Now that Jobs is no longer around does the iPad mini indicate that Apple is slowly deviating away from his vision?

In addition, the company is expected to launch the next-generation iPad, or so-called iPad 3, at the end of the first quarter. The production has started on the high-resolution displays destined for the next-generation iPad, reports CNET.
