New Delhi: The Assam Police is red-faced after the sketch it had released of a suspected bomber on Tuesday turned out to be that of a schoolboy.
The state police said they suspected Manohari Rajbongshi was a supporter of the banned militant separatist group United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and was involved in the serial blasts in the state on Monday.
Rajbongshi, it now turns out, is a Class X student in Lakhipur village in Baksa district. Police had released his photo along with that of another suspected bomber Deep.
Police claimed that both had infiltrated into Guwahati to carry out Monday's blasts ahead of the Prime Minister's visit to the state. Home Minister Chidambaram had even praised the Assam Police for releasing the photographs promptly.
“This is very unfortunate. I am sorry for that--some goof-up has taken place. This was not deliberate,” said GM Shrivastava, Director General of Police.
