Gujarat: At least eleven persons were killed and 17 passengers injured when a tractor they were travelling in overturned at Panchmahal district in Gujarat on Saturday.
Sources said, the tractor met with the accident when it was negotiating a slope near Sehra town and skidded off the road and fell in to a 20-ft dry well. The victims were on their way to a cremation ground for the last rites of a fellow villager.
Nearly 30 people were travelling in the tractor and eleven of them were killed, while the injured persons were rushed to a nearby hospital.
"Three tractors were heading for cremation ground. The driver of one of them lost control while reversing on a slope," said Panchmahal deputy superintendent of police V K Nai, who visited the accident spot.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that the tractor was over crowded - more than its capacity – when the accident took place.
Local police officers and rescue team with ambulance service rushed to the spot to rescue the victims.
