BANGALORE: The state government has decided to grant permission to employ female bartenders to in bars and restaurants in Bangalore with effect from Wednesday.
After chairing a meeting with owners of 48 bars and restaurants in the city, Excise Minister M P Renukacharya said that a decision was taken to allow bar owners to employ women in their establishments to serve food and liquor to customers. The excise minister said that while according permission to employ the fairer sex in bars and restaurants they were instructed to strictly follow the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court and the Karnataka High Court scrupulously.

"From today itself the owners can employ women to serve food and liquor in their bars and restaurants," the minister added.

Stating that all the bars and restaurants have to run as per the rules of the department and comply with the Apex court's guidelines, Renukacharya warned of punitive action against owners of such outlets if women were found dressed in obscene dresses.

Replying to a question, Renukacharya said that the department has not given permission to run live bands, dance or any other programmes in bars and restaurants to attract customers.

The contention of the police was that the girls employed to serve liquor may also resort to dance and attract customers in violation of the rules.
