The Assam police on Saturday arrested two alleged jihadis who are suspected to have links with Ansarullah Bangla Team and Indian IS.
According to Morigaon SP, Islam Mandal (80) and a minor boy aged 13 was arrested from Morigaon district’s Laharighat. Mandal’s Bangladesh passport was seized by the police, however local people revealed that the accused had been casting votes in various elections in Assam.
According to police, the duo illegally entered Assam through the Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura on December 15. Both the suspected Jihadis were living in Chenimari village of Morigaon district. Further investigation revealed that Mandal was living in Lahorighat after changing his name to Noor Mandal.
Talking to media, the SP of Morigaon district said,“A suspected member of Ansarullah Bangla Team and closely related to Indian Mujahiddin or Indian IS has been arrested. A 13 years old boy also been arrested with him. We previously picked 12 persons from Morabari PS area and initially arrested these two persons.”
Talking about Mandal, the arrested person’s passport and visa being suspicious, the SP said, “We have seized Islam Mandal’s passport but in Passport his Date of Birth has been written as 1.1.1943, but by physical appearance he does not seem to so older.” He further said, “Observing all these points we suspect he came here with some motive.”
Answering a question of reporters on Islam Mandal’s name being included in voter’s list, the SP admitted that such cases are happening in Assam. “We are getting reports of Bangladeshi people entering into Assam now and then. Surprisingly, most of the Bangladeshis who entered in recent times carried passport with them; but after entering India they vanished somewhere,” the SP said.
He added, “This is also true that people from Bangladesh come here illegally and cast vote in our elections. May be the minor who accompanied with Islam Mandal would have been stayed here and Mandal might have returned to Bangladesh again.”
