CHIDAMBARAM: The father of a BE final year student stabbed his daughter for having a relationship with a boy from a different caste near Chidambaram on Monday. Gnanavalli (21) of Melavalyamadevi village, studying BE at Annamalai University had been staying at a relative’s house in Chidambaram. Her father Sundaramurthy (46) had arranged an alliance for her, but she opposed it since she had been in love with the boy. Though Sundaramurthy repeatedly pleaded with his daughter, she refused to agree to the marriage. Police said that he even fell at her feet and begged her to accept the proposal. Irked by this, Sundaramurthy hid a knife and came to the university in the morning. He approached his daughter as she was standing at a photocopying shop with her friends. There too, he requested his daughter to give consent to the marriage. She reportedly told her father not to bring up the issue and firmly said that she would marry only her lover. He then, suddenly, stabbed her in public, shocking her friends and others present. Gnanavalli was taken to Raja Muthiah Medical College Hospital and was treated for injuries on her neck. Annamalai Nagar inspector Arockiyaraj conducted inquires with people around, as Sundaramurthy surrendered before him.
