Beat the accused with shoes: UP Panchayat tells rape survivor

In a bizarre incident, a panchayat in Hapur in Uttar Pradesh has ordered a rape survivor to beat up her rapist with shoes.

The accused had been fined Rs 5 lakh by the panchayat, but one of them refused to pay up. As a result, the panchayat allowed the victim to ink his face and beat him up. The incident has drawn condemnation from social activists.

There are allegations that the Panchayat stepped in after the police failed to act.

Two men had gangraped her in the Todalpur village on December 19.
