ALUVA: In a unique gesture, Aluva Residents Overseas Malayali Association (AROMA) donated a bicarbonate mixer to the Dialysis Centre at Aluva District Hospital. The proper mixing of bicarbonate concentrate is a top safety issue for every patient. Cent percent water purity is essential for the dialysis process since the patients undergoing dialysis are more vulnerable to infection. In most dialysis centres the mixing of bicarbonate powder and water from reverse osmosis plant, is done manually. In spite of the best effort to mix the powder, some sediments tend to settle at the bottom of the container which will affect the uniform conductivity of the bicarbonate solution. In a bicarbonate mixer, a mechanised equipment, the chemicals will be completely dissolved without leaving any sediments in the bottom of the tank. The bicarbonate mixer which costs more that Rs 1 lakh was installed at the hospital on Wednesday.AROMA which has already donated two dialysis units to Aluva District Hospital has offered to donate four more in the second phase of expansion of the Dialysis Centre in the hospital. Dr Rajalaksmi from Kottayam Medical College, who is qualified in dialysis process has been posted on deputation with effect from today, thanks to the effort of P Rajeev MP. Around 940 patients have undergone dialysis in the centre since its launch. The Regional Dialysis Centre in the hospital is a great blessing and hope for the renal patients as the patients are charged only Rs 200 (all inclusive) for each dialysis, said Dr N Vijayakumar, Medical Officer in charge of the Regional Dialysis Centre, Aluva. Dialysis is considered as a temporary treatment and the patient will be relieved only for three to seven days after one dialysis process. Renal transplantation is the permanent solution for the patients. The Dialysis Centre is planning to launch a project to encourage renal transplantation. Awareness will be created in this regard. P Rajeev MP has offered to take the initiative to launch the Kidney Transplantation Project, it is learnt.
