Aizawl (Mizoram): The Bharatiya Janata Party stated on Friday that it would put more efforts into strengthening its base in Mizoram for future elections.
BJP's Mizoram incharge and Lok Sabha member Kiran Rijegu said that they would launch an awareness campaign among the Mizo people, especially in the far-flung areas of the state.
The objective of the campaign would be to promote the fact that the BJP is a party for all, not for a single religion or a group.
"We are planning to bring to the fore the fact that the Congress has totally neglected the Mizoram people and their development," he added.
He also stated that despite the creation of the Development of the North East Region (DoNER) ministry by Vajpayee's NDA government, the people of the Northeast have not benefited because of the UPA government?s casual approach to the region.
He also accused the Congress of being power hungry.
"Even after one and a half years under the new UPA government, not much development has been undertaken in the northeast in general and Mizoram in particular", he observed.
Rijegu said the issue had taken prominence because Mizoram is one of the most literate states in the country and the people?s expectations are higher.
"Five years ago, the Arunachal Pradesh BJP unit was as weak as Mizoram. However with hard work it has transformed into a formidable opposition in the Assembly", he said, adding the same scenario could be seen in Mizoram in the near future.
