New Delhi: The braveheart Indian Army Colonel Munindra Nath Rai, who was killed in an encounter with Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Tral area on January 27, was a daring soldier who always led his team from the front.

His Whatsapp status captures his motto towards life. "Play your role in life with such dedication that people applaud you even after your death (Zindagi mein badi shiddat se nibhao apna kirdar, ki parda girne ke baad bhi taaliya bajti rahe)." This was the Whatsapp status of Colonel Rai. Indeed on January 27, 2015, he did what he believed in.

Colonel Rai - the Commanding Officer of 42 Rashtriya Rifles (2/9 Gorkha Rifles) - was killed just a day after he was awarded a gallantry medal (the Yudh Sewa Medal) at the Republic Day parade. Along with him, one policeman Sanjeev Singh was also martyred in the encounter. Sanjeev Singh, a resident of Doda in Jammu and Kashmir, was cremated with full state honours on Wednesday morning.

"MN Rai's quick thinking, retaliation led to death of terrorist in Tral. Had it not been for him there would have been casualties," recalled GOC 15 Corps Subrata Saha as he paid homage to the late Army officer.

Colonel Rai, a native of Derhgava village in Sohaval area of Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur district, is survived by his wife and three young children. The Uttar Pradesh government has announced Rs 30 lakh compensation for his family.

On a specific information regarding presence of armed terrorists, Awantipora police, 42 RR and 185 CRPF had launched a cordon and search operation in village Hundru, Tral in the jurisdiction of police station Tral.

During the search operation terrorists fired upon the joint search party triggering an encounter. Two terrorists Sheeraz Hassan Dar and Abid Khan were killed in the ensuing encounter.
