KOCHI: The students and teachers of Rajagiri Christu Jayanthi Kindergarten and Public School heaved a sigh of relief as Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has promised to take prompt action against the fly menace that is plaguing the school for quite some time.Benny Behnan MLA, Hibi Eden MLA and Mayor Tony Chammany would visit the waste treatment plant in Coimbatore Corporation on July 2 which has the track record of running smoothly till date, to study the technical know-how needed to run the plant. City Express had earlier reported on this serious issue on June 23.“We have shown him various pictures and clippings of how our children are affected by this. The Chief Minister promised us that he would look into the matter soon,” said Beena Simon, Headmistress, Rajagiri Christu Jayanthi Kindergarten.“The Brahmapuram waste treatment plant is defunct. It has sunk and is not fit for carrying out further activities. As the first and immediate step, the authorities concerned will soon take steps to bury the waste that is dumped in the plant with soil and lime blended with chemicals. It can solve the issue for the time being,” said Hibi Eden MLA. Though Chandy promised immediate action, there are many who have their own apprehensions about the idea. “How can they bury the waste without separating plastic and other poisonous materials,” asked M A Mohanan, opposition leader, Thrikkakara Municipality. "When you  cover up the waste with sand and lime without removing the plastic, it can block the water sources underground. This can aggravate the environmental problems. Kadambrayar is already dead. Now they are talking of installing other plants,” he said.
