Keeping with the ‘ Teacher’s Day’ tradition, the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University on Wednesday gave away the Best Doctor, Best Teacher and Lifetime Achievement Awards to doctors who have made outstanding contributions in their respective specialisations, enchancing the quality of medical academia and healthcare.
The Best Doctor Awards within Chennai region and outside were given to 35 doctors. Some of the notable names were Dr Amar Agarwal of Dr Agarwal Eye Hospital, Dr Alex Prasad of Chennai Cancer Care Hospital and Dr Indrani Suresh of Mediscan Systems. Lifetime Achievement Awards were given to another 25 experts from various specialities and super specialities.
Dr B K C Mohan Prasad, Mohan’s Medicity Hospital, Dr K Narayanasamy, Madras Medical College, Dr D Gunasingh, Institute of Child Health and Dr P M Venkata Sai from Sri Ramachandra University were some of those who were honoured with the Best Teacher Award.
Only a lamp, that burns can light another lamp. A teacher is like a candle, they consume themselves to light the way for others, said D Jayakumar, Speaker of Tamil Nadu Assembly, as he got a little philosophical at the award ceremony.
He also pointed out that Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa is committed to the objective of a healthy Tamil Nadu, thereby increasing the budget from Rs 3,889 crore in the previous regime to a massive Rs 5,567 crore for the year 2012-2013.
Congratulating physiotherapists on World Physiotherapy Day, he said, “This is the day to raise awareness about the crucial role played by the physiotherapist in making and keeping people mobile and independent.”
