CHENNAI: A Chennai-bound Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) from Tirumalpur rammed into a car at an unmanned level crossing near Kancheepuram on Tuesday, when it attempted to abruptly cross the track.Fortunately, the driver of the car, identified as Dass,an advocate from nearby Puliyambakkam, escaped with injuries even as his vehicle was mangled. According to a Government Railway Police (GRP) official, the driver tried to cross the unmanned level crossing at Nathapettai, on the Chengalpattu-Tirumalpur section, at 9.30 am. Madhiazhagan, Inspector, Chengalpattu GRP said that Dass was rushed to a Government Hospital. The mishap has also brought the need for manning the level crossing into sharp focus. When contacted, a senior railway official said that all the unmanned level crossings in Chennai Division would be eliminated by 2015.
