CHERUTHONI: Her life weighs more than what she carries. For 35-year-old Madathi, life weighs more than Bhairavan, whom she has been carrying on her shoulders for the past 27 years. The tribal siblings travelled a long way from Marayur panchayat of Idukki district to attend the Chief Minister’s Mass Contact Programme held at the Government Higher Secondary School, Vazhathopp, near Cheruthoni, on Thursday to seek assistance to lead a life of their own.Twenty-eight-year-old Bhairavan, the younger brother of Madathi, had suffered a severe attack of polio when he was one-and-half-year-old. His body got partly paralysed and he cannot even walk as a result of the attack. Since then, Madathi has been taking him on her shoulders wherever he wanted to go. She started carrying him on her shoulders when he weighed only 10 kg.Though he weighs around 58 kg now, it doesn’t matter her. “No matter how much he weighs, I can carry him like a baby. It is a routine matter for me,” says Madathi. The siblings’ plea to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy was to allocate them a financial aid to find self-employment. Accepting their request, the Chief Minister immediately gave them a cheque of Rs 10,000 to buy a sewing machine.
