College plans satellite study on epidemics

Prathyusha Institute of Technology and Management in Tiruvallur near Chennai has proposed to launch a satellite to study the spread of epidemic outbreaks.

As part of the initiative, different departments of the college are coming together to work on the satellite project, which is expected to be launched in two years from now, an official from the institute said.

Claiming that the satellite is first-of-its-kind by any educational institution in and around the city focusing on the field of medicine, the official added that the satellite would be launched from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

R M Vasagam, former senior scientist, ISRO and former vice chancellor of Anna University, is guiding the project, the official informed.

“Data on malaria outbreak can be fed in the satellite and we can study the vulnerable areas where the disease could spread,” the official provided as example.
