BANGALORE: The fourth edition of Bangalore International Film Festival (Biffes) organised by the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy (KCA) was inaugurated by Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda on Thursday.Speaking on the occasion, Sadananda Gowda wished the event all success. Presiding over the function, veteran actor Om Puri stressed on the need for the cinema industry to return to the cinemas of 1950s and 60s. “Cinemas produced during 1950 and 1960s provided entertainment as well as social significance, but today cinema consists mainly of entertainment. The producers need to reflect and go back to the cinemas of the 1950 and 1960s era,” he observed. He also recalled how his career in films had started from Karnataka in the year 1975.Iranian filmmaker Dariush Mehrjui,also graced the occasion. Kannada actor Anant Nag said, “Parallel cinema and main stream cinemas never came together. A convergence of these two streams is required. Movies of earlier times used to provide entertainment, education and enlightenment, all these features needs to be revived again.”Artistic Director of Biffes H N Narahari Rao, said, “The festival is not just about collecting films, it has to be made meaningful. We have tried to cater to all sections of audience, right from housewives to the needs of senior citizens. This year, for the first time, we have included a special selection of silent and vintage classic cinemas as well.”Around 180 films from 40 countries will be screened at nine screens across the city during the festival which will be on till December 22. Renowned filmmakers like Sturla Gunnarsson (Canada), Xie Fei, Sun Shaoyi (both from China), Jan Erick Holst (Norway), Gunilla Burstedt (Sweden) and Dang Nhat Minh (Vietnam) are participating in the festival and form part of the jury.
