SRIKAKULAM: A four-member Congress team headed by Rajya Sabha member V Hanumantha Rao on Monday visited Sompeta and Santabommali mandals in the district to make a detailed study of the proposed thermal projects in Beela swampland as a part of their three-day visit to North Andhra’s proposed thermal power projects and bauxite mining areas.The team comprising APCC secretary P Sudhakara Reddy, Government Chief Whip M Batti Vikramarka, Rajam MLA K Murali Mohan accompanied by leaders of Paryavarana Parirakshana Samithi (PPS) of Sompeta interacted with the people sitting on relay hunger strike at Sompeta to know their reaction regarding proposed project of Nagarjuna Construction Company (NCC) and government’s industrial policy.Receiving a representation from the PPS members demanding to stop the project and return the fertile land allotted by Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation to NCC, Hanumantha Rao during his visit to Beela land said, “These are wetlands. We will strive to do justice to the farmer and fishermen communities in terms of preparing an unbiased report on the project”.On 2,640-MW thermal plant of East Coast Energy Private Limited in swamp land of Santa Bommali mandal, Hanumantha Rao team said the company’s practice of not allowing anybody including the media to its premises would be brought to the notice of Congress high command.During the team’s visit to Vadditandra, they were told by the local women that their livelihood would be badly affected if any thermal power project comes up. “We assure that the opinion of the locals would be explained to Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar and Ministry of Environment and Forest Department”, he said.Meanwhile the bandh called by PPS in Sompeta and Kaviti mandals against the proposed thermal plants passed off peacefully without any untoward incidents.
