Counselling for 49 MBBS seats today

A total of 49 MBBS seats that have fallen vacant after first round of the CENTAC counselling would be taken up in the second and final round of counselling on Monday.

While there are six seats vacant in Indira Gandhi government Medical College and Research Institute  and one in Trivandrum medical college, there are 42 seats available in the seven self-financing colleges. Out of that while there are 10 seats in the three self- financing medical colleges under Pondicherry university, there are  32 seats in the four deemed medical institutions.  Initially all the seats would be taken up for counselling as per the reservation policy of the government.

If the seats under the reserved quota goes unfilled, it will be converted into general category seats on Monday and filled up, according to the CENTAC authorities. The vacancy in government medical colleges have risen after some of the students in the general category have got seats in JIPMER and have shifted there, CENTAC sources said. Others admitted have vacated their seats or opted for engineering.

In the deemed institutions, despite the high fee of Rs 5 to Rs 6 lakh, most of the seats have been filled up by students, similar to previous years. The reason is the promise made  by Chief Minister N Rangasamy of reimbursing a fee of Rs 2.25 lakh per student directly to the college, the students were required to pay up the balance amount.

While this is the scenario, the position of seats filled up under the NRI quota and the Government of India quota in IGMCRI is not available. In case of vacancy later, whether a third counselling would be held to fill up these seats through CENTAC has not been made clear yet.

Only Mahatma Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Dental Sciences has surrendered two seats from the unfilled NRI quota to CENTAC, CENTAC sources said.

Even the admission with regard to Government Ayurveda Medical College at Mahe is also uncertain, as the college is yet to receive approval for admission of students for the current year.
