International operations will restart after some time. The intention is to start immigration facilities at the earliest so that international flights can start by November 1.
Provisions are being made for the reopening of four counters to facilitate check-in for passengers. Efforts are also being made to reconstruct in a short duration, toilets, shops and food counters for passengers. The existing VIP lounge is also being made available to senior citizens, women and infants. The conveyor belt and aero bridge will also be made operational after due inspections.
The radar antenna, which was completely damaged, will be replaced and made functional within a month. Restoration, repair and renovation work relating to the civilian terminal will start immediately and is likely to be completed within the next three months.
For the time being, however, the Vizag airport will operate with no air conditioning and minimal furnishing.
Large portions of the terminal building including glasses, rooftop covering, air conditioning, computer systems, communication systems, electrical connections were destroyed by the fury of cyclone Hudhud that struck Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on 12 October. Glass sheets and lighting towers were also damaged.
Immediately after the cyclone, the navigational aids including DVOR (Doppler Very high frequency Range), ILS (Instrument Landing System), DME (Distance Measurement Estimation), PAPI (Precession Approach Path Indicator) were restored and the airport was made operational for relief planes.
