Deadline for Chennai Monorail tenders is Feb 20
With a single rail system, the Monorail is expected to create a revolution in the transportation system of the suburbs.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah on Monday informed the Legislative Assembly that the tendering process for the Monorail project was going on well. Delivering his customary address at the on-going session, the Governor said, “Towards the goal of achieving an Integrated Multi-Modal Urban Transportation System in Chennai, I am happy to note that the process of tendering to establish a Monorail system is progressing well.”

According to official sources, the deadline to submit tenders for the projects has been fixed as February 20, following which the Empowered Monorail Committee constituted by the government would pre-qualify and shortlist suitable applicants. The Committee chaired by the transport minister also comprises the Chief Secretary and secretaries from the departments of Finance, Industries and Transport.

With a single rail system, the Monorail is expected to create a revolution in the transportation system of the suburbs of Chennai. The Chennai Monorail system is proposed to constitute a network of four elevated corridors from  Vandalur to Puzhal via Avadi, Vandalur to Velachery via Tambaram East, Poonamallee to Kathipara via Porur and Poonamallee to Vadapalani via Valasarawakkam, covering a distance of about 111 kilometres in and around the city.

The Chennai Metropolitan area is expected to grow into a mega city with a population of more than 10 million in the next one decade. The metropolitan city will also witness a huge jump in vehicle population in the coming years. In such a scenario, the Metro and Mono Rail systems will be the most sought after facilities for people to commute, the sources added.
