New Delhi: After having virtually failed to implement the Supreme Court guidelines for school buses, the Delhi government on Monday came out with a set of norms for school bus owners.
The government has decided to register only those school buses which will follow rules as prescribed under the new policy that was approved by the Delhi Cabinet.
"Henceforth only registered school buses would be entitled to ferry students as their safety is utmost important," Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said.
She said the new scheme is open to existing as well as un-registered private motor vehicles plying only on clean fuel and installed with prescribed speed governors.
As per new scheme, vehicles more than 15 years old would not be eligible for registration to be used to ferry children and will not be given inter-state permits.
However, they can operate as an ordinary transport vehicle when not ferrying the children.
The school buses would be registered under a new series L 1K having a display board mentioning school cab inscribed with bold black letters on golden yellow background and with readily identifiable horizontal strip in its middle.
As a safety measure, the carrying capacity of the cabs as been limited to one and half times of the seating as stated in registration certificate.
The other mandatory safety provisions include training o drivers, speed limit at 40 km per hour, display of helpline inside and outside bus to be equipped with first-aid box.
