Development model flawed, says Nadkarni

BAGNALORE: Former vice-chancellor of Gulbarga University Dr M V Nadkarni has criticised the model of development being followed in the country. Delivering a special lecture on ‘Gandhian Approach to Development’ organised by Bangalore University’s (BU) Centre for Gandhian Studies on Sunday, he said, “high rates of economic growth have no meaning when indicators of human development like infant and maternity mortality rates in India are among the highest in the world.”  “The major gains of development are confined to cities   whereas the rural areas are witnessing a sharp decline in income,” he observed.
