CHENNAI: The DMK is yet to decide over whether it will contest the Tiruchy by-election given the circumstances that necessitated the poll and will make up its mind soon, party chief M Karunanidhi said on Sunday. Pointing out that the bypoll was necessitated due to the death of Mariam Pitchai, the AIADMK minister who died in a road accident just days after he won the seat in the Assembly election, he said his party would take a call on whether to stand back from the contest “on the grounds of compassion”.“The bypoll has come up because that friend, from a minority community, lost his life in a road accident. If all parties agree to my view that under such circumstances we must give up that seat to the party that already won it, then we too will accept it,” said Karunanidhi.Speaking to reporters on Sunday, he avoided comment on his party’s candidate list for the coming local body polls, which the DMK announced last week that it would face alone. He said any further decision on this would be made only after the polls were formally announced. He also reiterated an allegation made in DMK mouthpiece Murasoli recently that political considerations against the DMK were impacting the 2G spectrum scam case. “There is no doubt that things are going against the DMK. The court has not even come forward to grant bail and is dragging the proceedings,” he said. The recent statements made by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India over the perceived losses in the scam were a totally different matter and cannot be addressed in the same breath, he said.He expressed his solidarity with the views of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on communal harmony, but, added that certain acts from his past cannot be forgotten.
