Indian students, who plan to study in the US, need to be very thorough with their research on educational institutions before joining.
Else, they might end up like the many students from Andhra Pradesh who were left in the lurch after the CEO of Herguan University in New York was arrested for visa fraud.
“In America, at higher education levels, all the institutions do not come under the purview of the federal government, as there are regional level accreditation authorities,” said Katharine Dhanani, US Consul General.
Speaking at the Annual Foundation Day Lecture at the University of Hyderabad’s School of Management Science on Tuesday, she said it was unfortunate that Indian students, especially from Andhra Pradesh, were involved in both the cases where the institutions were charged with fraud.
She stressed that students must check for regional accreditation and browse the educational website set up for that purpose before making any plans.
She further said plans were currently underway to help students in India who want to study in America. “It is hard to research schools, and students require tools to address that problem,” she pointed out.
She also advised the students of UoH, who were passing out, to gear up for the everyday challenges they will face once they enter their respective industries.
Emphasising that the management industry requires more courageous decision makers, she opined, “a CEO is only as good as his team.
It is the performance of all the members in a team that ensures the smooth flow of the company’s functioning.” Touching on Indo-US bilateral relations, she observed, “in the past, maybe 40 years ago, India’s market was very local. But now, we have so many tie-ups between various companies. But even in that, we need to make sure that small and and medium enterprises in India and America have ties.”
The Consul General also launched five books published by the Management School
