A sniffer dog helped police crack a murder case in Baliguda area of Odisha's Kandhamal district and arrest three out of four accused persons, police said on Tuesday.
The two-year-old male dog, Faith, led police to accused Sambhu Mallick, Kartika Mallick and Sanatana Sahu of Penkapeta village who along with another person allegedly hacked Megha Mallick, 65 of the village to death in a nearby jungle, Police recovered the body on Sunday.
The accused confessed to the crime during interrogation after their arrest yesterday, said sub divisioal police officer (Baliguda) K V Singh. Practice of withcraft by the deceased was believed to be the reason behind the killing, Singh said.
"We have identified the fourth accused and search is on to nab him. The axe, which was used to kill the person, was thrown into a nearby pond and we are trying to recover it," he added.
The chocolate colour Labrador dog is credited with detecting accused in crimes like murder and dacoity in the past.
