In the case of student  membership, the total number in 2010-11 stood at 41.7 lakh while it was 43.27 lakh during the 2007-08 period. The major decrease in membership was reported in West Bengal, Tripura,  Andhra Pradesh, Assam and Karnataka. The number of memberships on the student front in Kerala showed a steady growth with the number of delagates increasing to 12.67 lakh in 2010-11 from 10.95 lakh in 2007-08 term.CPM’s 19th Party Congress, in its political-organisational report, had expressed dissatisfaction in the membership campaign for women and youth despite both registering an increase of 36 percent and 20 percent, respectively. It had directed that more efforts should be made to recruit more women and youth into the party.
