New Delhi: The Election Commission on Wednesday announced a seven-phase Assembly election for Uttar Pradesh, which will be conducted between April 7 and May 8.
Addressing an unscheduled press conference, Chief Election Commission N Gopalaswamy said the polls will be held April 7, April 13, April 18, April 23, April 28, May 3 and May 8. As many 62 consituencies will go to polls in the first phase. The notification for the first phase of elections will be issued on March 13.
The CEC said the election code of conduct will come into effect immediately. He said the elections will be conducted on basis of the revised electoral polls. The electoral rolls in UP were last revised on January 1, 2007.
Polls will he held in 62 seats in the first phase on April 7, while 58 seats will go to polls in the second phase on April 13.
Similarly, third phase on April 18 and fourth phase on April 23 will see voting in 57 seats each, polling will be held in 58 seats on April 28 in the fifth phase, 52 seats on May 3 in the sixth phase and in 59 seats in the last phase on May 8.
The counting of votes will be held on May 11 and the election process will be over well before May 14, when the term of the current Assembly is scheduled to expire.
Along with the 403 Assembly seats, the bypolls for three Lok Sabha seats will also be held simultenously, the CEC said.
He said about 11.5 crore voter will exercise their franchise in 1.10 lakh polling stations across the state. As many as 1.60 lakh electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be provided for the polls. The CEC said Central paramilitary forces and the state armed forces will be deployed for the smooth conduct of the elections.
