CHENNAI: The CPI (M) has urged the Centre to use its diplomatic leverage with the Sri Lankan government to press for a permanent political solution to the island nation’s linguistic crisis and to ensure the repatriation and rehabilitation of Tamils to their traditional homes. The party has also announced that it would reiterate its demands to the Centre by holding a protest in front of the Parliament in Delhi on September 7.Top brass of the CPI (M), ranging from its Central Committee members to state unit representatives and MPs, will take part in the protest and push for investigation into war crimes and human rights abuses in the final days of the Lankan civil war and the restoration of civil liberties to the Tamil populace.“As a neighbour, India has always had a role and leverage with the Sri Lankan government. It is time New Delhi uses its diplomatic channels to push for the demands we have put forth,” CPI (M) state secretary G Ramakrishnan told Express. His party’s demands are a reflection of those forwarded by the TNA in talks with Lanka, he added.
