A 32-year-old man, who was an eyewitness in a murder case allegedly involving a BSP leader, was shot dead on Saturday in Jain Nagar locality in Firozabad, police said.

Vinay Yadav was sitting in front of his house when three motorcycle-borne persons wearing helmets shot him dead, they said. Yadav is an eye witness in a 2008 murder case in which former BSP district president Fateh Singh is the main accused and is absconding since then, they said.

Police said over the past few days, raids were being carried out at Fateh Singh's house to arrest him, but to no avail. Source said sensing threat to his life, Vinay Yadav had been demanding security for himself. Meanwhile, infuriated over the murder, Yadav's family members and locals staged a sit-in on the Agra-Firozabad road.

It was only after SP Rakesh Singh reached the spot that the family handed over Yadav's body to police for post mortem. The SP assured the protesters that Yadav's murder case would be worked out soon. He said two policemen, including the incharge of Uttar and Dakshin police stations, had been suspended.

Jain Nagar locality falls in Uttar police station area. When asked about Yadav's demand for security for him, he said a probe would be held to find out why it was denied and action would be taken against the policemen responsible for it.
