New Delhi: Twitter was abuzz with wisecracks as frantic netizens took to venting on the microblogging site after Facebook went down for over two hours on early Friday (IST), its worst outage in four years.
“I shut down facebook. That'll teach The Social Network for trying to steal attention from the Deathly Hallows Trailer. Take that, Zuckerberg,” posted @Lord_Voldemort7.
Warner Bros Pictures released a new promotional trailer this week for a 3D sequel to “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I" which shows scenes from the final episodes where boy wizard Harry Potter takes on Lord Voldemort in a battle of good over evil.
The usual potshots at Facebook-obsessed users, who consider it absolutely essential to let friends know the minute-to-minute goings on in their lives, did the rounds.
“Facebook is down. We can't tell who's hungry or tired,” @MTVClutch
tweeted.
Humorists made most of the situation poking fun at the various Facebook features that allow users to promote their pictures and videos on the popular social networking site.
“Breaking News: Facebook is down! Users are roaming the streets shoving photos in people's faces and screaming "DO YOU LIKE THIS? DO YOU?" @maxxhendriks tweeted.
A gem from @alqaeda, with a profile picture of Osama bin Laden, was retweeted several times. “#facebook is down. Not sure if we did that, but we should claim credit anyway. Hitting the infidels where it hurts, etc.”
Blogger Meghan Casserly wrote a post on Forbes blogs on how to survive a Facebook outage for those whose lives revolve around the social networking site.
“Trust Zuckerberg? A ‘Facebook’s Down’ Survival Guide” urges users to get on Twitter and make phone calls to friends.
She advised readers “to talk to their friends to their faces.” “They look so different from their profile photo!”
Jokes ranged from “head for the hills… or Twitter” to “Facebook is down…nine months from now many babies will be born.
There was wild speculation on whether the site went down because of founder Mark Zuckerberg’s $100 million donation to Newark schools or his 35 ranking on the Forbes rich list.
However FB users appreciated a timely note from site engineer Robert Johnson explaining what had gone wrong.
“Early today Facebook was down or unreachable for many of you for approximately 2.5 hours. This is the worst outage we’ve had in over four years, and we wanted to first of all apologize for it. We also wanted to provide much more technical detail on what happened and share one big lesson learned,” Johnson wrote.
A grateful Steve Rodrigue commented on Johnson’s note: “Thanks to take the time to explains users,” while Kristin Hart-Conklin said “Wow considering what happened it was a pretty quick repair on your behalf. Thanks for the info - Good luck with the new design!”
