Family Problems, Alcohol Behind Farmer Suicides, MP Tells NHRC
The MP CID in a reply to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said that family problems, illness and alcohol consumption were the primary reasons behind farmer suicides in the state over the last decade.

New Delhi: Madhya Pradesh this month may have seen its biggest farmer stir in recent years but according to the state government, farmer suicides have little to do with farming itself. The MP CID in a reply to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said that family problems, illness and alcohol consumption were the primary reasons behind farmer suicides in the state over the last decade.

Proving information on farmer suicides in Madhya Pradesh from 2006 to 2015, the report claims that there had been a "substantial decrease in the number of suicides committed by farmers in MP". While the total number of farmer suicides, according to the report, in 2011 was 1,326, it was down to 581 in 2015.

Though the report cited "miscellaneous" causes as driving suicides, it also said, "While the police does not go in the specific causes of suicide, this data is based on suicides committed by persons whose known profession is farming."
