BERHAMPUR: Even as Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday assured loan waiver to Ganjam farmers affected by rain and drought, a farmer of Tikarapada in Digapahandi block, allegedly committed suicide over loan burden. Dibakar Sethi allegedly took the extreme step by consuming pesticide on Thursday morning. His family members said Sethi had faced crop loss in the cyclonic rains during November last year. He had borrowed money for cultivation and marriage of his daughter. Rains shattered his hopes of a good harvest. Though his name was included in the list of farmers eligible for compensation for crop loss, the money never reached him. This year, he again borrowed money but his crops got damaged due to drought. Under pressure to clear the debts, Sethi consumed pesticide. A case has been registered.
