Fearing the Indian Commie
Fearing the Indian Commie
Follow us:WhatsappFacebookTwitterTelegram.cls-1{fill:#4d4d4d;}.cls-2{fill:#fff;}Google NewsOne fervent request to the reader of this blog: don't dismiss me as McCarthy junior when you finish reading this. As someone who devours Tavleen Singh's column in The Indian Express and Vinod Mehta's famous Diary sections in Outlook, I am firmly of the belief that the Indian communists are really in a position to do incredible damage to our great nation.
What harm four decades of socialism couldn't do to our country, the likes of Prakash Karat, Gurudas Dasgupta and Sitaram Yechury (the unbelieveable politician who actually, to this day, justifies the Chinese government's crackdown on the well-meaning students in Tiananmen Square a decade and a half ago) promise to wreak on us. So, if they have their way, we should have 'modern' airports spruced up by the Airports Authority of India .we all know what superb kind of public service they provide, impose taxes on us 'capitalist' and 'hedonistic' youngsters who dare to actually blow money at multiplexes and (god forbid) shopping malls. (How dare we actually tuck into that McVeg Puff when thousands are dying of starvation in our country). And end all diplomatic ties with the capitalist West.

True, poverty is to be tackled, by all means. Citizens dying of starvation and farmers committing suicide are a nation's biggest shame. But experience has shown time and again that socialism does not work.Mr Karat talks of India following the Chinese model of development.Gladly. Only will he please spell out very precisely what he means by that since the Chinese have wisely allowed FDI in key areas, which is something the Indian Left is dead against.

I am not all that pro-American either, I have serious objections to several of Big Brother's policies, including over Iraq. But whether we like it or not, we have to learn with the United States. What do the CPI and the CPI (M) want? Strategic partnerships with Cuba and Venezuala or getting into bed with the most monstrous dictator of the world's most isolated and dangerous nation, North Korea? If communism is indeed the
solution to all the ills of life, why did the former Soviet satellite states in Eastern Europe torture their citizens and prevent them from leaving for greener pastures? Why did so many people die while crossing the Berlin Wall into West Germany and not one soul wantto defect to the East. Why do China, Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea or North Korea not have a free press? Why is it that, in each of these countries, personal liberty and freedom of expression are just things to dream about? Elections are coming up in Kerala and West Bengal, two of India's red bastions. I fervently pray and hope that Marxist rule is firmly booted out this time around. I admit I have never visited Kolkata but reading about the CPI(M)goons who physically prevented IT professionals from attending office during the last strike they called made me retch. Just who the hell are they who claim the 'right to strike' and bring life and livelihood to a standstill. If you don't approve of India voting against Iran due to its 'shameful' pro-US policy, by all means, protest. Democratically. Not by holding the nation to ransom. For the die-hard Leftists who continue to gag and choke the government with their constant blackmail of withdrawing support, I have one suggestion to make. There is plenty of bare land in Siberia, which incidentally is in Russia, one of the socialist paradises the Commies envision. Please go there, lock, stock and barrel, and implement all your policies there where you will cause no harm to anyone of us. When you have turned it into a 'successful socialist paradise', invite us.We'll come, watch and applaud.first published:February 26, 2006, 17:20 ISTlast updated:February 26, 2006, 17:20 IST
